Case Study

Building a Custom WordPress E-Commerce Store for a Clothing Brand

Background

Onihandmade built its following on Instagram, selling handmade clothing released in small batches rather than mass-produced inventory. Because of this, they never had thousands of products to manage; at any given time, the catalog is small and deliberate, with each release meant to feel like an event rather than just another item added to a grid.

Their business model shaped a very specific requirement: they didn’t want a typical, cookie-cutter e-commerce setup. Shopify was considered and explicitly ruled out, not because of pricing or platform limitations, but because of look and feel. Shopify stores tend to follow a familiar visual pattern that starts to feel the same from one store to the next, and that wasn’t the experience Onihandmade wanted for a handmade, small-batch brand with a strong Instagram identity. They wanted their website built on WordPress instead, giving them more room to shape a store that actually felt distinct.

The Goal

Since Onihandmade releases products in small batches rather than large volume, the website needed to put more focus and attention on each individual clothing item, rather than being optimized around browsing a large catalog. Every product needed room to feel considered, rather than getting lost in a generic grid layout.

The Build

The site was built using:

  • GeneratePress, chosen specifically for being a lightweight WordPress theme
  • WooCommerce, to handle the store, product listings, and checkout
  • Custom code, added where needed to support the product-focused experience Onihandmade wanted, rather than relying on a generic WooCommerce theme layout

On top of the build itself, Cloudflare Argo and APO (Automatic Platform Optimization) were configured to significantly improve site speed.

Result

The speed improvements had a real impact on the shopping experience itself. Page loading became noticeably faster, and the entire journey from browsing a product page through to the cart now feels smooth and responsive, exactly the kind of experience a small, considered, handmade brand needs in order to make each product feel worth the attention it’s given.

By avoiding a generic e-commerce template and building a lightweight, custom WordPress and WooCommerce store instead, Onihandmade ended up with a shopping experience that reflects the brand itself: distinct, considered, and fast.
